EFL Cup History in Brief

The English Football League cup was founded in 1960 with Aston Villa the first team to lift this trophy. This competition is open to all 92 teams in the top four tiers of English football and although it doesn’t have the prestige of other titles, come January if you’re still in it you’re going for the win. Liverpool have had the most success in this competition winning this trophy a massive 10 times and competing in 15 finals, followed closely in second by Manchester City who have lifted it 8 times so far. The highest goal scorer is Ian Rush (Liverpool) on a mammoth 49 and we don’t see this record being broken anytime soon.

The competition is currently sponsored by Carabao, hence the trophy is currently known as the Carabao cup. Back in the 1980’s the Milk Marketing Board sponsored the competition and to this day the older generation still call it the Milk Cup. Other sponsors over the years were Littlewoods, Coca-Cola, Carling and Capital One to name a few.

EFL Cup 2025 – 2026

This competition starts right at the beginning of the football season with first round matches kicking off around the beginning of August, with a small preliminary round before then. Premier Leagues sides that aren’t involved in European football enter the competition in the second round with the rest joining in the third round. All matches are now single leg affairs apart from the semi final, with VAR only being used when being played at a Premier League ground or Wembley in the final. There is an ongoing argument that this makes the landscape a little unfair and we will leave that to the governing bodies. If games are drawn after 90 minutes no extra time is played and the game is decided on a penalty shoot-out. The winner automatically gets a place in the Conference League however, they tend to qualify for Europe via their league position.

The current format does make it all much more exciting, alongside the fact that due to the demands of modern football the Premier League teams tend to play their youngsters and fringe players. There will be giant killers throughout this competition. Do you think you can predict them? How will you fare? We’ve come up with the EFL Cup bingo cards for the 2025/26 season. So download a set now and let the games begin!
