Oscars – When, Where, What

The 96th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, took place on Sunday March 10th 2024 at the Ovation Hollywood (the new name for the Dolby Theatre).  This year’s ceremony continued with last year’s return to traditional hosting arrangements. The entire ceremony was hosted by talk show host Jimmy Kimmel rather than 2022’s experiment with three hosts – Regina Hall, Amy Schumer and Wanda Sykes – presiding over different segments.  Jimmy Kimmel is no stranger to the Academy Awards – he presented in 2017 and 2018 as well as in 2023.

This year’s hot favourite to sweep the board is Oppenheimer with 13 nominations, but there have been upsets at the Oscars before so who knows. (In the end, it won 7)

The 2024 awards were the first in which the new diversity standards Academy Aperture 2025 were mandatory for the Best Picture category. These are intended to improve representation of minorities both on and off screen. The nominations for Best Picture were also increased to 10.

There’s also a new category to be added to the Oscars – Achievement in Casting – but it won’t be live until the 98th Academy Awards which will consider films released in 2025.

How To Watch The Oscars

The Oscars is streamed live on abc.com (USA only) and also has its own YouTube channel, as well as being on terrestrial, satellite and cable TV all over the world (in the UK, that’s Sky or Now TV).  The problem for those of us in the UK is the timing!  The Oscars broadcast starts an hour earlier than in previous years at 7pm Eastern time (so prime time evening viewing on the East Coast) which is 4pm Pacific time (in California where the ceremony is actually being held).  That’s midnight UK time, so anyone here who wants to watch the entire ceremony is going to be up until 3am, on a Sunday night.

If you’re in a more convenient timezone you might consider throwing a party for family or friends to watch the Oscars together!  Bingo is just one of the ways to make it all even more exciting.

What’s On The 2024 Oscars Bingo Card?

We’ve added some references to 2024 nominees and topical items including Barbenheimer.  But no, physical assault on a presenter is still not going on there – surely that can’t happen again! Can it?

You can also add your own items to the card if you want – just add them to the list before you generate your cards.

How To Play Oscars Bingo

It’s really simple!  Just press Generate Bingo Cards and then choose whether you want to print your cards or invite your friends by email.  Every player will receive a different card!  As you watch, tick off the events as they happen and try to be the first to call bingo!
