What is Crufts?

Crufts is, of course, the world’s biggest and most famous dog show.  Named after its founder Charles Cruft (who worked for Spratt’s, a dog biscuit manufacturer), it has a long and illustrious history; the first Crufts was held in 1891 and more than 2000 dogs were entered.

Crufts has been an annual event ever since but with a number of interruptions – the First World War, the Second World War, an electricians’ strike in 1954 and most recently Covid.

The show takes place over 4 days and attracts as many as 28,000 dogs (plus more than 160,000 human visitors) despite not being open entry – the dogs have to qualify for entry, which is most commonly done by winning prizes at other Kennel Club affiliated events.  Dogs compete in breed classes, agility and obedience and the breed winners compete for the coveted Best In Show.

Crufts 2024 takes place from 7th -10th March 2024 at the NEC Birmingham, where it has been since 1991 after outgrowing the previous venue.  This year more than 19,000 dogs are competing for Best In Show so it should be quite a spectacle!

How To Watch Crufts

The very best way to watch Crufts is to attend in person – there’s arena seating for up to 6000 spectators.  As well as your entry ticket, you’ll need an extra ticket to watch the Best In Show programme.  But don’t take your dog – unless they are an official entrant or assistance dog they won’t be allowed in!

If you aren’t planning to make the journey to Birmingham, there’s plenty of live TV coverage across all 4 days courtesy of Channel 4 and More4, including a live broadcast of the Best In Show programme from 7pm on the final day.

Crufts are also active across social media channels and have a YouTube channel as well as the usual Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.  Watch out for videos of the agility classes as well as the inevitable bloopers!
