Europa League Bingo Cards
Europa League 2024 – 2025
If you like your football you must have a soft spot for the Europa League. The European competition that teams are disappointed to be playing in as they didn’t quite make the Champions League, but come February if they are still in it will be going all out to go all the way. With four more teams participating in a bright and new format it does all sound a little bit complicated. But never fear, we are here to explain it all and better still you can now get your bingo cards prepared and ready for this great European competition.
So what’s changed with the format this season?
Europa League Format Changes
Since the competition began, it always started with four teams in a group playing each other home and away with a total of six games before the knockout stages. The top two teams with the most points within their group would advance.
But UEFA, with their vast knowledge and wisdom, decided to pull this tried and tested format for a very risky but maybe more exciting reboot. Well as the old saying goes a change is better than rest, so what did they do?
- Firstly, as mentioned before they added four more teams to the competition bringing it up to a total of 36 participants.
- Each team will now have to play eight games. Four at home and four away which were drawn using ranking and that no participant from the same country can play each other.
- Using a big league format the teams that finish in the top eight will inevitably qualify for the knockout stage round of 16.
- The teams that finish 9th to 24th will have to play in an extra round (which means 2 more games home and away) with the winners of these games added to the round of 16.
- The teams that finish in the bottom twelve, 25th to 36th well, for them as the late Jim Bowen used to say they get their “BFH” bus fare home.
- Lastly, you will be happy to hear that the format from the round of 16 stays exactly the same, with two games home and away and the final with one game in a neutral location.
So will these changes to our beloved European competitions make it more compelling and exciting? Only time will tell, but we can ensure the highs, lows and plenty of drama.
What Happened Last Season?
The 2023/24 Europa League was won by Atalanta which was the 1st time the Italian club has won a European trophy beating Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in Dublin. Leverkusen had a great season domestically winning the German league and cup double. As winners Atalanta qualified to play in the Champions League 2024/25. Seville were the then current champions but were knocked out in the groups stages of the Champions League after an overall poor performance.
The top goalscorer for the competition believe it or not was ex Arsenal Player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, scoring a whopping 10 goals for Marseille. British interest in the competition included Liverpool, West Ham, Brighton and Rangers. It all ended rather disappointingly for the home nations with Brighton and Rangers being knocked out in the round of 16 and West Ham and Liverpool reaching the Quarter finals respectively.
The Europa League was a goal fest with 439 scored in last season’s competition and a massive 31 of them just scored by Leverkusen (wow).
How will this season play out?
This season’s Europa League is as competitive as ever and finding the winner is like looking for a needle in a haystack. British clubs are represented by Tottenham, Man U and Rangers. 34 Nations were represented at the start of the competition with 22 nations making it to the new League format where they now have to play 8 games instead of last seasons 6. Additionally for the 1st time in this contest, teams that get knocked out of the Champions league early don’t get to play in this competition. Which I believe makes it fairer and more exciting.
So who’s gonna win it? Both Tottenham and Man U are inconsistent but are capable so it’s hard to write them off. Could a Turkish side surprise, Galatasaray will be difficult to play away from home. Or will an Italian team win this again with Lazio and Roma representing. One thing is certain: there will be goals, drama, tears and British clubs playing in parts of Europe you have never heard of, against teams you can barely pronounce. Cmon Azerbaijan’s Qarabag!
