Slingo – How It Works
Slingo is a game which is a mash-up of slots and 75 ball bingo. It’s played on a 5×5 grid with numbers which looks very much like a 75 ball bingo card with an array of 1×5 reels next to it. The reels have numbers 1-75 plus some special symbols:
- Jokers let you mark off any number of your choice in the adjacent column
- Super Jokers let you mark off any number of your choice anywhere on the grid
- Free Spin symbols add an extra spin to your total
- Some Slingo games have other special symbols taht can trigger bonuses
Each game of Slingo has a set number of spins of the reels and the aim is to complete lines on the board (known as Slingos) by marking off the numbers. The more Slingos you complete, the better the payout. You can also buy extra spins at the end to help you complete more Slingos for a chance at a bigger prize.
Slingo is certainly big on entertainment value! In a regular slot game you pay per spin and this can result in spending a lot of money extremely quickly. A game of Slingo, on the other hand, can last for several minutes and (depending on which version of Slingo you are playing) costs from just 10p – IF you stick to the initial set of spins plus any free spins you win. Extend the game by buying extra spins, though, and you can easily end up spending much more than your original stake. All versions of Slingo now have a safer gambling settings screen where you can set limits on the number of extra spins and/or the maximum price of extra spins before you start to play. Extra spins are also only available if there’s a chance of completing one or more Slingos on the next spin.
Most Slingo games have RTP of 95% – 96% and currently it’s the same wherever you play them so there’s no need to shop around.
The Return To Player of slot games can change and may not be the same at all casinos. Please check the in-game documentation before playing for the correct RTP figure.
Slingo – A Brief History
Slingo was invented in the 1990s and at first it was not a real money game. In the non real money versions, you had to daub the numbers manually, usually against the clock, and there were lots of exciting power ups.
Nearly 20 years after the birth of Slingo, Gaming Realms bought the rights to the name along with the associated domain Slingo.com (which is now a Skill on net casino). The first real money Slingo game Slingo Riches was released in 2015 and at the same time, most of the free versions of the game were withdrawn.
For the first few years, the full range of real money Slingo games could be played at Gaming Realms operated casinos but in 2019, they decided to concentrate on creating games and licensing them to other operators rather than running their own casinos. Today, there are getting on for 100 real money Slingo games widely available to play at UK facing casinos and bingo sites.
Don’t want to play with real money? It’s still possible to play Slingo for fun, but the feature packed free to play versions of the early 2000s are long gone; instead, social casino apps such as Slingo Arcade have play for fun versions of the real money games.
The Slingo IP remains under the ownership of Gaming Realms and all Slingo games are either produced by them alone or in collaboration with other games providers. For example, Slingo Money Train uses IP from the slot game of the same name by arrangement with Relax Gaming.
Slingo and Bingo
There have been two bingo games themed on Slingo.
- Slingo Boom aka “boom bingo” was an exotic and rather complicated variant of 75 ball bingo that was only available to play at sites powered by Gaming Realms. It never gained much traction with players and was retired in early 2019.
- Slingo Bingo is a 75 ball bingo game that is exclusive to Gala Bingo and other Entain bingo sites. It’s a single ticket multi stake game with 5 numbers called at a time. After 8 spins, the prize pool for the base game is split on the basis of how many lines (Slingos) have been completed by the players in the game, proportional to their stake value (and if that sounds complicated, it’s because it IS complicated!). There’s also an option to buy 2 extra spins at the end of each game; there’s a separate prize pool for these.
Slingo and Slot Games
Probably the most popular Slingo games are those themed on well known slot games.
It all kicked off with the release of Slingo Rainbow Riches in May 2018. Themed on the UK’s favourite slot machine, the game’s USP is that instead of fixed payouts based on how many Slingos (i.e. fully daubed rows, columns or diagonals) you complete, you win bonus rounds inspired by the slot game. The more Slingos, the better the bonus round you get to play. This adds a whole new dimension of entertainment to the game as the results from playing the bonus rounds vary just as much as they do in the original game.
Slingo Centurion followed soon after, taking bonus rounds from the Centurion Maximus Winnus slot. Again, this proved very popular so it was only a matter of time before the much loved slot Fluffy Favourites got the Slingo treatment in October 2020.
A further release – and the most innovative so far – in this particular series of Slingo games landed in March 2021. Slingo Starburst puts the expanding wilds bonus feature from the Starburst slot into the base game rather than awarding it as a prize: the prizes are guaranteed win spins and the more Slingos you complete, the higher scoring the symbol that is used. The game also has lower variance than most earlier Slingo games and this means that it is more entertaining to play for those who prefer not to buy extra spins, as they are more likely to win something.
Several more slot game themed versions of Slingo followed including:
- Slingo Sweet Bonanza,
- Slingo Da Vinci Diamonds
- Stinkin’ Rich Slingo
- Slingo Cleopatra
- Slingo Money Train
Over the last few years we’ve also said hello to Slingone Fishin’ and Book of Slingo, which were inspired by genres of slot game rather than being officially themed on a specific game.
We expect even more slot themed Slingo games to be released in 2026.
Slingo and Innovation
Other Slingo games which have been released over the last few years have gone off piste in some very interesting ways.
- Slingo Cascade has exploding wins which means the board can never be cleared
- Slingo Advance is like a retro arcade game; you start with just one spin and have to collect matches to unlock more of the play area and further spins
- Slingo Lucky Streak gives you two lives instead of a set number of spins; lose them both (by not matching any numbers twice in a row) and it’s game over
- Slingo Fire & Ice features two side by side Slingo boards with the reels shared between them. The Ice side awards payouts and the Fire side awards multipliers
- Slingo Racing adds a pick your own variance side game
- In Slingo Deadliest Catch, you can collect bonus crabs to give you extra picks if you win a bonus round
With all these different varieties of Slingo there’s bound to be one you find enjoyable (you might want to avoid Slingo Reveal though, as it has a substantially worse RTP than other Slingo games).
Slingo and Bonuses
It’s extremely rare to find welcome offers at UK casino sites that are specifically for use on Slingo. Paddy Power does Slingo stake & get offers and prize draws from time to time, but these are for existing players.
Some slot bonus offers can be used to play Slingo but most can’t. If you’d like to use your welcome bonus on Slingo we recommend checking the terms and conditions carefully before signing up, bearing in mind that the full list of included or excluded games may not be explicitly in the offer terms and conditions and you may have to follow a link from there to see it.
The Future of Slingo
The UK government has confirmed that Slingo is classed as a slot game for the purposes of the stake limits that were introduced in spring 2025, of £2 for players under 25 and £5 for everyone else. It looked like extra spins might be force stopped after far fewer than the 40 originally allowed in order to comply with this but in fact, as long as you play Slingo at minimum stake you will not notice any difference; no matter how far you progress up the win ladder, extra spins will never become expensive enough to exceeed the limit.
That hurdle cleared, the future looks bright for this bingo-slots mash-up and new titles continue to be released monthly.
