Our slot of the month for October 2019 is the delightfully retro video game themed Snake by Gamevy. If you’ve ever owned a Nokia phone, you’ve probably played a version of the iconic video game Snake, which is great fun even on a tiny old fashioned phone screen. The aim of the game is to control a line of pixels which snakes around the screen avoiding obstacles and its own tail. This very entertaining new slot game is themed on the Snake video game in a way that is much more than skin deep.
How To Play Snake
The Snake slot, which has 20 paylines, plays on a 5 x 3 reels array which has been beautifully designed to look like an old phone or hand held console with a tiny green screen; the portrait orientation means that it works really well on a modern phone screen. During the base game, the mock screen shows an animation of two snakes with a pile of eggs – unless you get a big win, in which case one of the snakes slinks around the screen celebrating and the words Mega Win, Super Mega Win etc appear.
The lower scoring symbols in Snake are snake eggs and the higher scoring symbols are colourful snakes. All are animated when they form part of a winning line. The sounds are a retro delight, too – the background music sounds like it is being played on an early polyphonic phone and the sound effects are reminiscent of those in vintage arcade games.
Snake has two bonus rounds. One of them, triggered by three “snake charmer flute” scatters, is a straightforward 10 free spins with a random multiplier (of 1-10) applied to each spin. During the free spins, a snake appears on the mock phone screen keeping count of the spins and multipliers.
The letters S N A K and E can also appear on the reels in both the base game and (more commonly) during free spins. When a letter appears, it part fills the meter for the corresponding letter at the top of the screen. Each meter needs three fills to reach the top and as soon as all five are full, the second bonus round starts. (It can also be triggered by three “snakes in a crate” scatters).
It’s this second bonus round that makes Snake a really great game – it’s an actual, playable game of Snake! Don’t worry if you aren’t any good at Snake though, if you don’t want to have a go at controlling the snake manually there’s an auto play button. The snake moves around the screen collecting pellets. Each pellet contains either:
- A cash prize
- A bonus meter contribution (needs 3 to fill) – when full, awards a cash prize on the next pellet then resets
- A jackpot meter contribution (needs 7 to fill) – when full, awards the jackpot
- A bomb – this ends the bonus round
Each pellet makes the snake longer and if the head of the snake crashes into the body this also ends the bonus round. If you are lucky enough to win the game by getting the snake to maximum length, you collect the jackpot!
We’ve never seen anything quite like this slot game before and expect it to be very popular indeed with anyone who likes a spot of retro gaming.
Snake has a rather generous RTP of 98.005% and can be played at spin values from 20p to £40.
