Our Slot of the Month for August 2019 is Return Of Kong Megaways by Blueprint. Many of the recent Megaways slots – Rainbow Riches Megaways, Medusa Megaways, Raging Rhino Megaways – have taken classic slot games of the past and given them the Megaways treatment. Return Of Kong Megaways does it too, bringing back Kong from the King Kong Cash slot but in this case, the character is particularly well liked because he is clearly a homage to a well known video game character. This has made the slot instantly very popular.
How To Play Return Of Kong Megaways
Return Of Kong Megaways is played on a 6 reel array with up to 7 symbols per reel giving up to 117,649 ways to win. It has some features that are common to most but not all Megaways slots:
- Horizontal belt above reels 2-5 which is the only place wilds appear
- Cascading wins – winning symbols explode and others drop down to fill the gaps
In the base game, there is one other feature – Golden Barrels. This can be triggered on any spin; Kong throws a golden barrel at the reels adding up to 100 mystery symbols which all turn into the same random symbol when they land.
The bonus round will also be familiar to anyone who has played Megaways slots before – it’s 12 free spins triggered by spelling K-O-N-G with scatters (plus 5 extra for any scatters in excess of 4) and played with a multiplier that goes up by 1 with each cascade win. There are a couple of differences though:
- The bonus round begins with the activation of the Golden Barrels feature and it remains active throughout.
- During the bonus round, Golden Monkeys are added to the horizontal reel. Every time the player collects 3 Golden Monkeys in the storage area to the left of the reels, 2 extra free spins are awarded and the minimum number of Megaways that can be active is upgraded for all remaining free spins.
Again as anyone who has played Megaways slots before will know, this can produce very variable results as depending how high the multiplier goes and what the minimum number of Megaways is, wins towards the end of the bonus round can pay out much, much more than wins near the beginning.
Like many other Megaways slots, Return of Kong Megaways gives players who don’t want to wait for the bonus round the opportunity to pay to go there immediately.
Pressing the Bonus Bet button reveals two options for buying the bonus round – Bonus Buy for 100x stake and Mystery Bonus Buy for 150x stake.
Bonus Buy starts the regular bonus round of 12 spins. Mystery Bonus Buy leads to a screen where two wheels spin to reveal a combination of free spins (often less than 12) and minimum number of Megaways. Essentially this is a controlled gamble on the bonus round which doesn’t carry the risk of losing it altogether.
Return of Kong Megaways has RTP of 96.03% and although there is plenty of scope for wins in the base game they tend to be very small – even 5 of a kind of the lower scoring symbols is worth just 0.4 x stake. It can be played from 10p a spin but alas, at UK slot sites it no longer has the buy the bonus feature.
Where To Play Return Of Kong Megaways
Return of Kong Megaways is widely available but many UK operators including some big names such as Mecca Bingo and Heart Bingo have chosen not to enable the Bonus Bet button. Here are a few we know have it.
