Mighty Griffin Megaways is our ‘Slot of the Month’ for February and is the latest game to be developed from the ground up using Big Time Gaming’s cutting-edge game engine. Recently unveiled by Blueprint, it comprises six feels with up to seven rows and offers more than 100,000 pay-lines.
It seems that developers just can’t get enough of ancient Greece. Although we won’t go into just how many slots are inspired by this classical epoch, suffice to say the list is epic in scope. Yet Blueprints’s take on Mediterranean days of yore seems rather muddled at first glance.
Apart from the mighty griffin, the rest of the game comprises an assortment of symbols and imagery more suited to Arthurian legend – we don’t recall a fairy castle playing much of a role in the works of Homer et al. But in fairness, the griffin was a popular symbol during medieval times so we’ll let Blueprint off. Uh, anyway. So how does the game play?
Typically, low value symbols are signified by playing card numbers and letters. Higher value symbols include a ring, crown, feather and of course a golden griffin. Unsurprisingly, the latter symbol is the most valuable and can pay out as much as fifty times your initial stake. A book serves as the wild and appears in the standard Megaways row above the main reels. As ever, it replaces all other symbols apart from scatters.
Like all Megways slots, Mighty Griffin includes the cascading reels mechanic where all symbols in a winning combo are replaced by falling ones. This process continues until no further wins are possible. The potential for consecutive wins means this feature can occasionally be quite lucrative.
A blue orb represents MG’s mystery feature. When this lands in any position on the reels, it transforms symbols to form winning combinations.
Mighty Griffin Megaways’ free spin side-game is triggered by landing three or more griffin scatter symbols anywhere on the main reels. You’ll then receive 10 free spins and the Golden Streak feature comes into play.
Here the scatters are locked in place while the reels are re-spun, continuing until no additional scatters materialise. They also stop if a reel fills with scatters. Should this occur, you’ll be in line for a sizeable number of spins. It’s possible to gamble these for more free spins as well as the chance to reactivate the streak feature. Lose, and you’ll be taken back to the base game.
Once you’ve got your free spins, the Unlimited Wins mechanic kicks in with multipliers awarded in single increments after every cascade or win. When three scatters become visible you’ll be awarded with yet more free spins which are limitless, thanks to the Megaways engine.
Mighty Griffin is connected to the Jackpot King progressive network. To get the chance of winning big pay-outs you’ll need to land four ‘Jackpot King’ symbols and then spin the reels to uncover four crowns.
If fifteen or more appear, the Wheel King bonus game gets unlocked. You will then be presented with a wheel displaying an assortment of multipliers and jackpots. In the highly unlikely event that the wheel stops on one of the progressive prizes, you’ll be the lucky recipient of a substantial amount of money. Needless to say, a smaller cash pay-out or multiplier is a far more realistic outcome.
Despite the glaring similarities with Wolf Legend Megaways, Mighty Griffin includes a few more features to set it apart ever so slightly, namely the jackpot system. Thematic oddities aside, the game looks great with polished visuals and a decent accompanying score. There’s also plenty of win potential here thanks to that Megaways mechanic.
