Our Slot of the Month for July 2019 is Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness by Play N Go. It is a sequel of sorts to the hugely popular Book of Dead in that both feature the Rich Wilde character, but Tome of Madness is a very different type of slot, owing more to games such as Gemix than to the usual type of slot game.
Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness is played on a 5×5 grid and has no paylines as such. Instead, wins are awarded for groups of 4 or more matching symbols touching horizontally or vertically. Winning groups explode, the rest of the symbols drop down into the gaps and new symbols drop in from the top of the screen. the cascade continues until there are no more wins.
As well as a regular wild symbol (Rich Wilde himself) that doubles wins, the game has a number of features that are designed to keep cascades going longer once started.
Eye Marks – in most but not all spins in the base game, one of the grid spots is occupied by the Eye Mark (a purple frame). A win over the location of the Eye Mark adds 2 Special Wilds (the Tome symbol) to the grid; they appear at the end of the win cascade with the potential to extend it further by creating extra win combinations.
Portal Effects – the Portal Meter is charged by collecting winning symbols. On the way to collecting the number of symbols needed to reach the bonus round, there are three feature triggers:
Other World Free Round – this is triggered by winning on 42 symbols and consists of a single spin with 3 enhanced portal effects, plus one extra for every 3 winning symbols collected in excess of 42, up to a maximum of 7 enhanced portal effects for 54 winning symbols or more. The portal effects add 4 Special Wilds rather than the 2 in the base game, and kick in one by one each time the win cascade comes to an end. During the Other World Free Round, a pattern of 11 or 12 Eye Marks is present on the grid and the aim is to collect wins over all of them (some patterns are easier than others).
Mega Wild – if you succeed in opening all the eyes in the Other World Free Round, the Cthulhu Mega Wild is summoned. This 4×4 wild starts at the top of the screen, making winning combinations with all adjacent symbols. The adjacent symbols explode as part of the winning cascade but Cthulhu doesn’t; he continues to form winning combinations until he reaches the bottom of the array creating the potential for an extremely large win.
Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness has RTP of 96.59% and can be played at spin values from 10p to £100. With its atmospheric theming and potential for incredibly exciting win cascades, this slot game could easily prove to be just as popular as its predecessor.
