Our Slot of the Month for August 2018 is Rise of Olympus by PlayNGo.
Rise of Olympus is a Greek mythology themed slot played on a 5×5 grid and offering a maximum win of 5000x bet. It can be played with bet sizes from 20p to £100 a spin and has much in common with PlayNGo’s earlier game Viking Runecraft (which is played on a 7×7 grid).
Wins are scored in Rise of Olympus by collecting lines of 3 or more symbols, horizontally or vertically. The same symbol can appear in more than one combo and the three God symbols count as a mixed combo as well as in their own right. Wilds can also count as a combo in their own right as well as substituting for any other symbol.
Winning symbols are removed (but some wilds stay) and the remaining symbols (including wilds) drop down – and this is where Rise of Olympus is different to Viking Runecraft or indeed almost any other cascading symbols slot. You’d expect fresh symbols to drop down to fill the gaps, but they don’t – the aim is to clear the entire grid by removing all symbols apart from wilds. Each time a drop occurs, the multiplier goes up.
As in Viking Runecraft, one of the Gods stands at the side of the array. Each God (there are three in Rise of Olympus) has a different Hand of God power which can be randomly activated on any non winning spin.
- Hades: One set of symbols transform into another symbol
- Poseidon: Up to 2 wilds can appear
- Zeus: Two sets of symbols are destroyed (this helps to clear the grid but doesn’t score anything or increase the multiplier)
Once a God’s power has been activated, he is replaced with the next God.
Rise of Olympus has a meter which is charged by getting wins with God symbols. A set of three charges one section, a set of 4 charges 2 sections and a set of 5 charges all three sections. When the meter is fully charged, the Wrath of Olympus free round starts (it can’t be retriggered). During the Wrath of Olympus round (which is a fresh spin with the multiplier reset to 1), the three Gods in turn activate their special powers (always in the same order). This can result in some nice wins but to have the chance of a really big win you’ll need to clear the entire grid to trigger the EXTREMELY rare free spins bonus round.
If you do manage to clear the grid (which could take literally thousands of spins), there are three free spins bonus rounds to choose between, one for each of the three Gods:
- Hades – 4 free spins with Hades Hand of God feature on all non winning spins.
- Poseidon – 5 free spins with Poseidon Hand of God feature on all non winning spins.
- Zeus – 8 free spins with Zeus Hand of God feature on all non winning spins.
The Wrath of Olympus feature is not active in the bonus round. Instead, fully charging the meter awards extra free spins – 4 for Hades, 3 for Poseidon and 2 for Zeus – up to a maximum of 20 free spins altogether.
During the bonus round, the multiplier is not reset between spins and can climb as high as 20x.
If the grid is cleared during free spins the bonus round is not retriggered – instead the the player wins an instant prize of 100x bet.
Rise of Olympus plays well on mobile; in landscape mode it is much like the desktop version but in portrait mode it looks particularly nice.
Rise of Olympus has an RTP of 96.5% but an awful lot of it is tied up in the oh so elusive bonus round, so to get the full enjoyment of this online slot game you may need patience and deep pockets as well as luck.
