Football Pie Connoisseur – The Journey Begins

Football fans and food enthusiasts, the wait is over! Our search for the Football Pie Connoisseur has been an exciting journey so far, and we’re thrilled to share the first ranking from our winner, Ian Coulton. As part of Ian’s dream job, he is attending away games for his team, Wigan Athletic, to sample the iconic pies found at football matches in tiers 3-5 of football.

The 50-year-old Wigan Athletic supporter made his way to Huddersfield Town on December 13th for his first away game of the campaign. While his beloved team didn’t come away with a victory, Ian still found joy in the game by sampling Huddersfield’s meat and potato pie. Let’s dive into his review!

Ian Coulton tries the Huddersfield Town pie
A very solid 22/25!

Ian’s Review of Huddersfield Town’s Pie

  • Pastry quality – 4/5
  • Filling quality – 5/5
  • Temperature– 5/5
  • Value for money (price v portion size) – 4/5
  • Presentation – 4/5

Total score – 22/25

Ian is no stranger to sampling pies, having previously won the ‘World Pie-eating Competition’ in both 2013 and 2023, so it’s safe to say that Huddersfield Town’s solid score of 22/25 is an impressive one.

Commenting on his experience, Ian stated:

“There was a good combination of flavours when I tasted the pastry and filling together, with tender chunks of potato mix with meat and at a perfect temperature. The golden brown colour of the pastry was clearly there and so added to the quality (taste). The pastry was a little soggy at the bottom but otherwise could not really fault the pie. Upon receiving the pie, the presentation was a tidy one. Overall, a good pie.”

Ian’s pie reviews will continue as he attends more matches over the next few weeks. Pies on offer at the next few venues include the ‘Bluebird Steak and Welsh Ale Pie’ at Cardiff City FC, the ‘Chicken Balti Pie’ at Bradford City FC and ‘Chicken and Mushroom Pie’ available at Doncaster Rovers.

Here’s a quick look at the games coming up:

  • 26th December 2025 – Bradford City (3pm)
  • 29th December 2025 – Burton Albion (7:45pm)
  • 4th January 2026 – Cardiff City (3pm)
  • 24th January 2026 – Doncaster Rovers (3pm)
