Our online Slot of the Month for January 2020 is Piggy Riches Megaways. It’s a Red Tiger sequel to a Net Ent slot, using technology licensed from Big Time Gaming and with all those industry giants involved, no wonder there’s such a buzz about it. The original Piggy Riches slot was released way back in 2010 and had just 15 paylines, whereas the new Megaways version has up to 117, 649 ways to win.
How To Play Piggy Riches Megaways
Piggy Riches Megaways has the cascading wins feature which is almost de rigeur in Megaways slots, but it doesn’t have the Bonanza style conveyor belt; the action is confined to the 6 vertical reels which each hold up to 7 symbols, all of which are faithful reproductions of the symbols in the original game – a pair of super rich pigs with all their piggy themed bling.
The gentleman pig appears as the Mega Wild which takes up the entire height of a reel and carries a multiplier of 2x to 7x, but in the base game it is rare for a Mega Wild to form part of a winning combo. Although the Mega Wild looks like a wild reel, it is actually a single wild symbol (like the multiplier wilds in Danger High Voltage) so wins that include one are not as big as you might initially expect. Up to 3 Mega Wilds per spin can land and their multipliers stack rather than being added together – as in the picture where 7 ways to win are multiplied by 3 and 3 again to result in 63 ways.
“Not as big as you might expect” applies to the majority of wins in the base game, in fact; a glance at the paytable reveals that even 6 of a kind of the lower value symbols pays out less than the spin value. Large wins can be had with the right combinations of higher value symbols, cascades and/or Mega Wilds but they are not at all common.
The real excitement, unsurprisingly given that this is a Megaways slot, is reserved for the bonus round – and again unsurprisingly, the bonus round itself can be anything from frankly underwhelming to absolutely spectacular. The bonus round is triggered by three scatters (the lady pig symbol); expect to have to wait for hundreds of spins or even more for this to happen.
Once the bonus round has been triggered, the Spin The Wheel screen appears to determine how many free spins will be awarded and what the starting multiplier will be. The inner wheel awards 7 – 22 free spins and the outer wheel awards a starting multiplier of 1x to 10x, so there’s wildly varying potential in the bonus round before it even gets started. Extra spins can be awarded during the bonus round if more scatters appear.
The free spins take place with that signature Megaways feature, a multiplier that increases by 1 with each cascade – so the more wins you rack up during the free spins, the bigger the wins get.
Piggy Wins Megaways has a gamble feature which is activated after winning spins (unless the win is very small or you are using autoplay). It has its own RTP of 96% (better than the RTP of the game itself!) and the variance can be adjusted by the player.
The other important symbol in Piggy Wins Megaways is one you’ll hardly ever see – the Jackpot symbol. Yes, Piggy Riches Megaways is part of the Daily Jackpots series; the actual jackpots vary from site to site depending on how the operator has configured them and how busy the site is (more players = bigger jackpots). When three Jackpot symbols appear on the reels, that’s when you get to play the jackpot game and have a chance of winning really big.
Piggy Riches Megaways will undoubtedly appeal to both Megaways fans and lovers of the original game but with so much of the 95.71% RTP tied up in the jackpots and in the extremely volatile bonus round, it may not be ideal for more casual players.
