Slot of the Month: Road Rage

Updated: 19th Apr 2023
Road Rage from No Limit City is our slot of the month for August. As most SOTM games, Road Rage features a solid, if chaotic base game that includes modifiers, upgradable symbols and multiplier wilds. On top of these is an array of bonus features, not to mention a large potential pay-out of up to 36,000x your stake.
Theme/Visuals
No Limit City is well-known for its gritty approach when it comes to theme. Despite the occasional unpleasantness found within their games, there’s rarely any faulting the presentation levels. Well-conceived and designed to exacting standards, most of their slots are highly immersive.
But unlike its predecessors, Road Rage is simple both in terms of design and concept. The five reel game area is set against a birds-eye view of a dirt-road-street T-junction and is of course inspired by bad tempered drivers.
Like the background, the reel symbols are cartoon-like and include a collection of driver symbols in various states of pique.
A non-descript industrial score accompanies play and really should be turned off.
How to Play Road Rage
Low value symbols are represented by a rear view mirror, mobile phone, Christmas tree air freshener, a flat tyre and coffee cup. The latter symbol offers the best pay-out (1.5 x your stake). The character symbols are of a medium-to-high value and are named, Aristocrat, Gran, Karen, Artem and Joe. Joe is the most valuable and pays out up to 5x your stake when he appears five times across a pay-line.
Unique Wilds
The base game features three colour-coded wild car symbols. As well as substituting paying symbols to help you form winning combinations, each one includes a unique modifier. These are as follows:
Yellow Car Wild – known as the engine breakdown feature, this wild increases all other symbol sizes by one on the same reel.
Red Car Wild – this is the drive-by feature and drives across the screen from right to left, increasing symbol multipliers by 1 as it runs over them. It also leaves a wild at the start and end of its route.
Green Car Wild – this is also a drive-by feature and performs the same function as the red car, albeit in an opposite direction.
Colliding Cars Feature
When the red and green car wilds move towards each other across the screen, the Colliding Cars feature gets activated. The multipliers from each car are then added together and the total is then displayed on a Colliding Wild. This special wild remains sticky provided both cars are too in any bonus mode.
However, car movements are stopped by scatter, mystery symbols or other wild cars. Also beware the Fuel Rage feature. This kicks in when three red cards are travelling on the same row. This makes the last red car ‘rage out’ which loses you one drive-by multiplier.
Rage Buff
Before each bonus mode activates, additional spins and multipliers are decided by the Rage Buff. For this mechanic, you’ll see cars travel across the reels which will then obey various road signs.
These are:
- Stop sign – stops the car
- Turn signs – makes the car turn left, right or do a U-turn. When the latter occurs, the buff re-spin is activated. The triggering reel then sticks and holds the car in place.
- Free spin sign – awards an extra spin
- Car sign – increases sticky multipliers by one.
- Speed bump – increased drive-by multiplier by one
- Dice sign – reveals a free spin, car or speed bump with a x2 multiplier attached
Free Spin Features
There are three free spin features which are activated by landing a specific number of traffic light scatters in any position. You’ll need a minimum of three to trigger one of them. However, land two and you’ll receive a re-sin and a guaranteed wild car for both reels upon which you landed the scatters. Here are the free spin features:
Morning Rush – this requires three scatters and you’ll receive six free spins. The game area changes to a three row layout with one wild car sticky in the top position throughout. Land one or two scatters and the feature upgrades to the Highway Jam or City Mayhem features. Every sticky car that you land will give you an extra spin should you manage to upgrade.
Highway Jam – four scatters are needed for this feature. Eight free spins are awarded and you’ll play with four rows. Two wild cars are chosen and also remain sticky. You’ll need one scatter to upgrade to the City Mayhem feature and again, an extra spin will be awarded for each sticky car.
City Mayhem – land five scatters and you’ll access the City Mayhem feature. 10 free spins will be awarded and five rows become active. All three of the wild cars is in play during this feature and remain sticky as the stop positions.
Mystery symbols are only active for the free spin features. These can reveal yellow, red or green colours. Should they match one of the wild cars, the multiplier of the car is increased. If the car isn’t present in the bonus round, you’ll still get an extra spin.
Conclusion
Road Rage certainly represents a slightly different direction for No Limit City. For one thing, the visual presentation and soundtrack are stripped down. It’s the same with game play too. NLC’s trademark x-mechanics are not included here. But the chaotic base game is fun, if not a little confusing. The multiple free spin features are plus points well, not to mention the chance to win 36,000x your stake.
