What is Neosurf?

Neosurf is the latest entrant to the prepaid voucher system market in the UK. It’s originally French, was founded in 2004 and is rapidly making inroads into the UK market and indeed everywhere else – Neosurf vouchers can be bought in more than 50 countries and can be used to pay at more than 20,000 websites worldwide.

You can buy Neosurf vouchers at many convenience stores using cash or open an account online and fund it with cash, bank transfer or cryptocurrency.  It has the same advantages and disadvantages as Paysafecard – safe and secure but can’t be used for withdrawals, and you’ll still have to give the bingo or slot site a lot of personal information for account verification.

Neosurf is quite a bit more than that though – it works on several levels.  At the most basic level, you buy a Neosurf voucher with cash and use it to make a deposit.  You don’t need to open a myNeosurf account.  If you do, you can choose between Basic and Premium.  Basic accounts have a deposit limit and can’t process refunds.   To open a Premium account, you’ll need to supply ID documents.  You can also apply for a Neocash Mastercard, which can be used to withdraw cash from your myNeosurf account at ATMs.

How To Get Started With Neosurf

It’s pretty simple – just visit the Neosurf website to find out where to buy a voucher.  You can view outlets that are local to you on a map or see a list of online sellers such as Dundle.

If you like, you can also open a basic myNeosurf account by filling in the form on the website.  You’ll be asked for your name, email address and date of birth and will then be sent a verification link via email.  Click on that, fill in your address and phone number and accept the terms and conditions and you’re good to go!

It is NOT necessary to open an account to use Neosurf to deposit.

How To Deposit Using Neosurf

Select Neosurf at the cashier screen then choose the amount you want to deposit.  You’ll be redirected to the secure Neosurf payments screen (it appears in a pop-up) where you can enter the code from a Neosurf voucher.

Although the option to pay by card appears at this stage, it is not currently enabled at online gambling sites and unless you have a myNeoSurf account with money already in it, you’ll need a voucher code to make a deposit.

Advantages of Neosurf

• Neosurf vouchers can be bought with cash so there’s no need to have a debit card or a bank account (you’ll need a bank account to withdraw to though)!

Disadvantages of Neosurf

• Using Neosurf can be expensive. There’s a 4.5% fee for funding your MyNeosurf account with a Neosurf voucher (meaning that it’s much better to deposit directly with the voucher code rather than going via MyNeosurf) and a 1.5% for withdrawing your Neosurf balance via bank transfer.  You may also be charged a fee when you buy a Neosurf voucher.
• Neosurf vouchers are essentially cash – if you lose the voucher or someone else gets hold of and uses the code there is no redress.  You can cancel a voucher code direct with Neosurf if you think it may have been compromised, as long as it hasn’t already been used.
• Currently Neosurf can only be used to deposit at UK casinos and slot sites, not to withdraw.
• Payment cards cannot be used when depositing at an online gambling site with Neosurf – you have to have a voucher code, or a MyNeosurf account with money in it (which can only come from a voucher or a bank transfer).

Safety and Security with Neosurf

Neosurf is ideal for players who don’t want to transmit any banking details over the internet.  Assuming that you buy the voucher at a retailer rather than online, the only thing that ever gets transmitted is the voucher code, and even that is only sent to the Neosurf payments gateway, not to the casino.

Alternatives to Neosurf

The Future of Neosurf

Neosurf certainly has a lot going for it as it combines elements of an e-wallet and a prepaid debit card with a voucher payment system and enables players to make quick and secure deposits without parting with much personal information.  If it weren’t for the fees that can make it so expensive to use, it would probably have gained a lot more traction at Uk facing casinos already.

We have to wonder, though, whether in a world of enhanced affordability checks the Gambling Commission might clamp down on deposit methods that enable players to bypass their own bank account.  After all, someone who buys a Neosurf voucher with cash could very well have a huge overdraft and be gambling with money they can’t afford to lose, and neither the bank nor the operator would be any the wiser.  So we wouldn’t be surprised to see it (and other payment methods with the same issues) removed from UK gambling sites, but continue to be a huge hit outside of the online gambling industry – and outside of the UK.
