A collection of the best slot games themed on Vikings and Norse mythology

  • Play Vikings at Vegas Luck
Deposit £10+, Spin The Mega Wheel, Top Prize 500 x 50p Spins

Vikings is NetEnt’s flagship new release slot game for November 2018, themed on the Netflix show of the same name.  It is a 243 way slot with several bonus features.  The Hotspot feature is activated when a stacked Viking symbol covers reel 3; it changes all other Viking symbols in the play area to that one and pays out using the Scatter Pays section of the paytable (which goes all the way up to 200,000 coins for 27 Vikings!).  The Shield Wall is randomly activated on a non winning spin in the base game – it changes a 3×2 or 5×2 cluster of symbols to Vikings.

The bonus round in Vikings is called Raid Spins and has the potential to be very exciting indeed.  It is just 7 spins, but with every other feature massively enhanced. The play area expands to 7 x 5 giving 78125 ways to win, the Shield Wall can be bigger, there are Hotspots on three reels rather than one and Hotspot wins pay on ways to win as well as Scatter Pays.

  • Play Thor’s Lightning at Volt Casino
Up to 300 Cash Spins on your First Deposit

Thor’s Lightning is a new game by Red Tiger, capitalising on the current fashion for Norse mythology and Viking themed games.  It is played on an unusual 7 x 7 array with a 3 x 3 central block.  It has no paylines as such – clusters of 5 or more symbols win, and winning groups explode allowing more symbols to drop in.  Matches adjacent to the central block remove tiles from it – match in every adjacent space to remove them all and trigger one of the two free spins bonus rounds.  The randomly triggered Lightning feature removes low paying symbols or turns random symbols to the same type or wilds and the randomly triggered Hammer feature removes symbols or nudges columns and/or rows.  Red Tiger are best known for their daily jackpot games and this style of game is a bit of a departure for them – and likely to be a highly successful one, as the game is refreshingly different and lots of fun to play.  RTP is 96.08%.

  • Play Vikings Go Wild at Big Thunder Slots
Deposit £10+ To Try Your Luck On The Mega Reel, Top Prize 500 Starburst Spins

Vikings Go Wild was the first of Yggdrasil’s Viking series to be released, back in August 2015 (before they even got a UK licence).  It introduced the concept that is central to all three of the slots in the series – the Vikings fight a monster (in this game it is a sea monster) and if they win, they turn into a sticky wild.  In Vikings Go Wild this only happens during the bonus round, and the bonus round can only be triggered by getting three or more free spins symbols or finding free spins in a treasure chest.  Although Vikings Go Wild has fewer features than its sequels, this 25 line slot still has plenty of entertainment value.

Vikings Go Wild has RTP of 96.3% and can be played from 25p a spin.

    * New players only, min deposit £10, £8 max win per 10 spins, max bonus conversion equal to lifetime deposits (up to £250), 65x wagering requirement and full T&Cs apply

  • Play Vikings Go Berzerk at Sunny Wins
Deposit £10+ To Open a Loot Chest - Top Prize 500 Slot Spins

Vikings Go Berzerk is the second game in Yggdrasil’s Vikings series, released in November 2016.  It introduced the Berzerk feature which allows players to collect Rage as they play by scoring wins on Viking symbols.  As in the previous game, during the bonus round Vikings fight a monster (in this case a siren) and turn into a sticky wild if they win.  Vikings who have gone Berzerk (either a result of filling their rage meter which immediately triggers free spins or as a result of getting the version of the bonus round where all 4 of them go Berzerk) always win their fights.  The different versions of the bonus round and the rage collection add extra entertainment value as compared to the original game.

Vikings Go Berzerk can be played from 25p a spin and has RTP of 96.1%.

    * New players only, min deposit £10, £8 max win per 10 spins, max bonus conversion equal to lifetime deposits (up to £250), 65x wagering requirement and full T&Cs apply

  • Play Vikings Go To Hell at Spin Riches
Deposit £10+ To Spin The Mega Reel, Top Prize 500 Slot Spins

Vikings Go To Hell by Yggdrasil is the third in their series of Viking themed slots and was released in May 2018.  It was the first in the series to be exposed to a big UK audience and the first to use Yggdrasil’s iSENSE 2.0+ platform – meaning that the graphics look much better than in the earlier games and the game is also much more playable on mobile devices than its predecessors.

As well as going wild and berzerk as in the previous two games, this time the Vikings also go to Hell to fight demons.  This happens in the respin feature and in the bonus round, where they have to fight two big bosses.  Winning Vikings go wild and Berzerk Vikings always win fights.

The bonus round is quite rare but the respin feature and the treasure chests that can appear on reel 5 make the base game entertaining.  Vikings Go To Hell has RTP of 96.1% and can be played from 10p a spin.

    * New players only, min deposit £10, £8 max win per 10 spins, max bonus conversion equal to lifetime deposits (up to £250), 65x wagering requirement and full T&Cs apply

  • Play Viking Runecraft at Lucky VIP Casino
    Deposit £10 - £50, Get 100% Slot Bonus

Viking Runecraft by PlayNGo is one of those games that are more like a match 3 than a slot machine.  it is played on a 7×7 grid and the aim is to match groups of 5 or more of the same rune; winning sets of symbols are removed, the rest of the symbols drop down to fill the gaps and more drop in at the top.  Several bonus features make the game more interesting; for a start, each of the four Norse gods has a different power that can be randomly triggered on any spin increasing the chance of winning.  There’s a two stage process to get to the bonus round – collect 20 symbols to fill the meter, then try to collect 4 more wins with the help of one of the 4 Charge of Destruction bonus effects to reach the Ragnarok bonus round.  In the bonus round, the 4 bonus effects trigger one after another, each time there are no more wins.  All winning combos in the bonus round help to fill the multiplier meter and this can go all the way up to x15 with the potential for the occasional very large win.

Viking Runecraft also has a level up mechanic.  Make matches over all the squares of the pattern to play the Runes of Valhalla bonus game and release the stored payout and swap to a different god for the next level.  RTP is 96.71% and it can be played from 10p a spin.

    * Min. 1st dep. of £10-£50. Max bonus £50 on selected slots; 30x wagering on the sum of deposit & bonus applies. Max convertible to real is £250. T&C's Apply.

  • Play Vikings Unleashed Megaways at Paddy Power Games
100 No Deposit Spins + Deposit & Play £10, Get Another 100 Free Spins - All Winnings In Cash

Vikings Unleashed Megaways is one of several games produced by Blueprint using the Megaways mechanic under licence from Big Time Gaming (who invented it).  The base game plays very like Bonanza and what makes it different to many other Megaways slots is the bonus round – or rather the elaborate mechanisms for setting up the bonus round.  There are FOUR different options for buying the bonus round (priced at 25x, 50x, 75x and 100x spin value) and before the bonus round starts the player can gamble to get a better bonus round – one extra spin and one multiplier step at a time.  Gambling successfully all the way up to the maximum of 27 free spins starting with a 10x multiplier can open the way for a very large win indeed, as every cascade win during the bonus round increases the multiplier by 1, but lose a gamble and you lose the entire bonus round.

Vikings Unleashed Megaways has RTP of 96.5% and can be played from 20p a spin; at that spin value the cheapest buy the bonus round option (5 free spins) is priced at £5.

  • Play Age of the Gods Norse: King of Asgard at Betfair Casino
    30 Free Spins

Age of the Gods Norse: King of Asgard is a new for 2020 addition to the Age of the Gods progressive jackpot.  Having presumably run out of ideas to do with the Greek gods, Playtech (or rather their Ash Gaming subsidiary) have turned their attention to Norse mythology, starting with Odin, the King of Asgard.

Odin’s Fury Respins is the name of the special feature in this slot, which is played on a 6×4 array.  If an Odin Wild symbol stack lands fully on the reels it becomes a walking wild and respins continue until it reaches the left hand edge of the play area.  Loki Wilds which appear during respins push him back towards the right.  There’s a multiplier which increments on each respin and is applied to the final respin when Odin is on reel 1.

The progressive jackpot arrangements are not quite the same as the rest of the Age of the Gods games; the main progressive is networked but instead of the three smaller jackpots there are two, and these are operator configurable so will vary from site to site.

Age of the Gods Norse: King of Asgard has RTP of 96.67% (including the jackpot) and can be played from 20p a spin.

    * Winnings from free spins paid as cash. Free spins expire 7 days after acceptance. New Casino players from UK & Ireland only. SMS verification required. T&Cs apply. By taking part in this promotion, you agree with our Terms & Conditions.

Viking Themed Slot Games

Over the last few years Viking themed slot games have become extremely fashionable because of the Netflix TV series Vikings.  The show was first aired back in 2013 and by 2018 it was in its 5th season and had gained a huge following.  The official TV tie in game was launched in November 2018 by NetEnt and many other releases over the last few years have clearly been inspired by the series.

Slot games themed on Vikings and Norse mythology have always been popular with players though, all the way back to the release of the original Thunderstruck by Microgaming in 2004.  Thunderstruck II, which was released in 2010 and was one of the first slots to have 243 ways to win, paytable achievements and bonus round unlock, is still much loved today.

Thor, the Norse god of thunder featured in Thunderstruck and Thunderstruck II, is such a common character to find in slot games that he is almost a genre of slot all by himself.  Lightning bolts and the hammer weapon are ideal motifs for bonus features and of course, thanks to Thor’s appearance with the Avengers in the Marvel Universe films, everyone knows who he is and what he does (though THAT version of Thor won’t be featured in any slot games any time thanks to Disney, who own the rights).

Thor’s powers are by no means the only Viking related concept that translates well into a slot game feature, however.  What do Vikings famously do when they fight?  They go Berzerk, of course!  Berzerkers, or Berserkers, were Viking warriors who (according to Norse sagas and poems) fought in a trance-like fury and in some accounts this gave them super strength and made them invulnerable to certain weapons.   What a concept for a bonus round that is – and the designers at Yggdrasil and Thunderkick had a field day with it.

The 6th season of Vikings is due to air in 2019 and 2020 and looks set to be even more popular than before, so we expect to see many more Viking themed slot games over the next couple of years.
