So we’re back with our favourite pillagers as Inspired offers its own reel-spinning interpretation of one of history’s most vicious bands of seafaring warriors.

Unsurprisingly, the reels aren’t decorated with burning farmsteads or butchered townsfolk. No. They’re actually adorned with various Viking must-haves such as a horn, rings, runic cards and Norse deities.

Vikings Go Berzerk Reloaded is a five reel slot from Yggdrasil that boasts plenty of features. These include multiplier wilds, sticky wilds, a gamble option and a potential max win ceiling of 25,000x your stake.

The game isn’t so much a full-fledged sequel but more an upgrade to the original game from 2016. The main differences relate to the improved cartoon visuals, a more elaborate free spins round and a better max-win potential. The action takes place in a snowy cave with the reels populated by a variety of cartoon marauders.

Norse mythology is the theme once more as Pragmatic takes us to the doors of Valhalla. Not that the pearly gates for Viking warriors is anywhere to be seen. Other than a large hammer next to the reels, there’s not much to indicate the game’s inspiration.

Nonetheless, GOV features an arresting, brooding soundtrack (to begin with anyway) that fits the theme quite nicely. And like the famed seaborne invaders, the game is pretty volatile. To win, you’ll need to land three for our five symbols across a pay-line. It’s possible to win up to 75x your stake if you land Odin. Thor and Freya are the other Viking deities – they pay out 10x and 20x your stake respectively.

Each win generates the tumble feature in which all winning symbols are replaced with new ones, making it possible to create consecutive wins. Book of Vikings is a five reel slot by Pragmatic Play that was released in the autumn of 2020. The best bits include expanding symbols and a very decent RTP.

The game is of course based on those marauding Norse-men of distant times past who terrorised most of northern Europe, killing the hell out of pretty much everything along the way.

As a nod to these rather unpleasant human beings, the reels are decorated with a male warrior and, thank Odin, a female one too. The other symbols are made up of a horn and playing card letters. To win, you’ll need to land two, three, four or five across a pay-line.

There’s also a dual-purpose wild in play that replaces standard symbols to help create winning combinations. It also triggers the free spins bonus round, should you manage to land it three, four or five times.

Odins Riches is a 7 x 7 rolling reels slot that went on general release in June 2021. This is the first such game from Microgaming’s thralls, JustForTheWin, with the developer’s previous efforts tending to lean towards twee, colourful and cute.

Although Odin’s Riches is by no means a shocker in the visuals department, there’s not a whole lot of eye-candy here. The game area comprises a kind of ancient scroll that frames a 7 x 7 grid which itself is decorated with rune stones and animal symbols including a raven, serpent, wolf and dragon.

The dragon is the most valuable of the medium to high value symbols and will award 300x your stake provided you land a 15 strong cluster. There’s also a standard wild that pays out the same amount, substituting other symbols to help you create paying clusters. During the base game, the Odin Wilds feature can activate at random. This sees Odin appear and drop up to 9 wilds onto the game grid.

The rolling reels mechanic is active meaning that winning symbols are removed to be replaced with new ones. What’s more, following each successful cluster, the symbols are added to a bonus meter which triggers a mini feature for every 25 symbols accumulated. One of four mini features then becomes active: Dragon Riches, Wolf’s Hunger, Serpent’s Wisdom and Raven’s Flight.

For the Dragon’s Riches feature, at least five symbols will create a winning cluster irrespective of their position, while for Wolf’s Hunger, all low value symbols are removed from the game area and a cascade is triggered.

Asgardian Stones is a 2018 five reel slot from NetEnt featuring colossal symbols, a bonus wheel side game and a standard free spins round.

Based on Norse mythology, Asgardian Shores still holds it own despite being around for a good few years now. Given Netent’s reputation for creating pretty games, this doesn’t really come as much of a surprise.

Set against a well-drawn depiction of Asgard, the reels are made of stone tablets which rumble satisfyingly with each spin. There’s been plenty of talk about the soundtrack being ‘epic’ but it’s actually more noise than anything else.

Power of Thor Megaways is a six reel game from Pragmatic Play featuring BGT’s flagship engine and a relatively generous RTP.

Viking themed slots – who needs them? Well, it seems that most developers do as well as plenty of players, given just how many are out there. And this particular offering from Pragmatic is another decent addition to this very well-populated genre.

Age of the Gods Ruler of the Dead is an addition, for Winter 2020, to Playtech’s classic Age of the Gods series of slot games and is based on Orpheus’ journey to the Underworld from Greek mythology.

The base game is very much in the vein of the first batch of games in the series (which were actually reskins of Marvel superhero slots after Playtech lost the rights to use characters from the MCU) in that it’s a 25 line slot on a classic 5×3 reel set.  The main feature is the wild symbols of Cerberus and Charon, both of which are three symbols high and appear on the middle reels only. Vikings Go Berzerk is the second game in Yggdrasil’s Vikings series, released in November 2016.  It introduced the Berzerk feature which allows players to collect Rage as they play by scoring wins on Viking symbols.  As in the previous game, during the bonus round Vikings fight a monster (in this case a siren) and turn into a sticky wild if they win.  Vikings who have gone Berzerk (either a result of filling their rage meter which immediately triggers free spins or as a result of getting the version of the bonus round where all 4 of them go Berzerk) always win their fights.  The different versions of the bonus round and the rage collection add extra entertainment value as compared to the original game.

Vikings Go Wild was the first of Yggdrasil’s Viking series to be released, back in August 2015 (before they even got a UK licence).  It introduced the concept that is central to all three of the slots in the series – the Vikings fight a monster (in this game it is a sea monster) and if they win, they turn into a sticky wild.  In Vikings Go Wild this only happens during the bonus round, and the bonus round can only be triggered by getting three or more free spins symbols or finding free spins in a treasure chest.  Although Vikings Go Wild has fewer features than its sequels, this 25 line slot still has plenty of entertainment value.

Vikings Go To Hell by Yggdrasil is the third in their series of Viking themed slots and was released in May 2018.  It was the first in the series to be exposed to a big UK audience and the first to use Yggdrasil’s iSENSE 2.0+ platform – meaning that the graphics look much better than in the earlier games and the game is also much more playable on mobile devices than its predecessors.

As well as going wild and berzerk as in the previous two games, this time the Vikings also go to Hell to fight demons.  This happens in the respin feature and in the bonus round, where they have to fight two big bosses.  Winning Vikings go wild and Berzerk Vikings always win fights.

The bonus round is quite rare but the respin feature and the treasure chests that can appear on reel 5 make the base game entertaining.  Vikings Go To Hell has RTP of 96.1% and can be played from 10p a spin.

Vikings Unleashed Megaways is one of several games produced by Blueprint using the Megaways mechanic under licence from Big Time Gaming (who invented it).  The base game plays very like Bonanza and what makes it different to many other Megaways slots is the bonus round – or rather the elaborate mechanisms for setting up the bonus round.

Before bonus buy slots were banned in the UK, there were FOUR different options for buying the bonus round (priced at 25x, 50x, 75x and 100x spin value).  Now, you have to wait to trigger it in the normal way.

Viking Runecraft by PlayNGo is one of those games that are more like a match 3 than a slot machine.  it is played on a 7×7 grid and the aim is to match groups of 5 or more of the same rune; winning sets of symbols are removed, the rest of the symbols drop down to fill the gaps and more drop in at the top.  Several bonus features make the game more interesting; for a start, each of the four Norse gods has a different power that can be randomly triggered on any spin increasing the chance of winning.  There’s a two stage process to get to the bonus round – collect 20 symbols to fill the meter, then try to collect 4 more wins with the help of one of the 4 Charge of Destruction bonus effects to reach the Ragnarok bonus round.  In the bonus round, the 4 bonus effects trigger one after another, each time there are no more wins.  All winning combos in the bonus round help to fill the multiplier meter and this can go all the way up to x15 with the potential for the occasional very large win.

Thor’s Lightning is a new game by Red Tiger, capitalising on the current fashion for Norse mythology and Viking themed games.  It is played on an unusual 7 x 7 array with a 3 x 3 central block.  It has no paylines as such – clusters of 5 or more symbols win, and winning groups explode allowing more symbols to drop in.  Matches adjacent to the central block remove tiles from it – match in every adjacent space to remove them all and trigger one of the two free spins bonus rounds.  The randomly triggered Lightning feature removes low paying symbols or turns random symbols to the same type or wilds and the randomly triggered Hammer feature removes symbols or nudges columns and/or rows.  Red Tiger are best known for their daily jackpot games and this style of game is a bit of a departure for them – and likely to be a highly successful one, as the game is refreshingly different and lots of fun to play.  RTP is 96.08%.

Valkyrie is the latest slot game from ELK Studios.  It is a 1024 way high variance thriller themed on female figures from Norse mythology.   The 5×4 reels array can include Big Symbols which are up to 3×3 in size and these can produce some exciting wins if they land in the right place.

Vikings is NetEnt’s flagship new release slot game for November 2018, themed on the Netflix show of the same name.  It is a 243 way slot with several bonus features.  The Hotspot feature is activated when a stacked Viking symbol covers reel 3; it changes all other Viking symbols in the play area to that one and pays out using the Scatter Pays section of the paytable (which goes all the way up to 200,000 coins for 27 Vikings!).  The Shield Wall is randomly activated on a non winning spin in the base game – it changes a 3×2 or 5×2 cluster of symbols to Vikings.
