Bonus Buy Slots

Following action by the Gambling Commission back in October 2019 it is no longer possible in the UK to play slot games with a straightforward “buy the bonus round” facility and this is being actively policed. Most of the games which had the bonus buy feature are still available for UK players, but without the feature. Many games still enable players to collect coins towards an eventual purchase of the bonus round and/or gamble the bonus round once they have triggered it.
Some slot games sidestep the issue by having a button that lets players place a larger bet with several possible prizes – including bonus rounds. This is acceptable, apparently, as long as getting the bonus round is not certain. We’ve tracked down some of these, plus a few where you can buy respins of individual reels and trigger the bonus round that way. That for UK players, is as close as you’re going to get.

Play Lady of Avalon at PokerStars Casino
Deposit £10+, Get 200% Slot Bonus (up to £300) + 100 SpinsLady of Avalon is a popular Barcrest slot game with five reels, 10 pay-lines and a free spins bonus round that includes expanding symbols.
If you’re looking for sophisticated reel animations and feature-laden bonus rounds, then you’re going to be a bit disappointed with Lady of Avalon. In keeping with most other Barcrest slots, the game is fairly simplistic, both in terms of design and game-play.
Low-value reel symbols are represented by the same kind of tired playing card icons included in far too many slot games. Given the vague-conceived fantasy theme, these are joined by an assortment of objects including spell-books, unicorns, wizards and a castle. Speaking of fantasies, if you land the wizard five times on a pay-line, you’ll win 500 times your stake.
Lady Avalon herself makes an appearance, serving as both the wild and scatter. She’ll pay out 250x your stake when she appears five times and can also activate the free spins round. When the latter occurs, you’ll receive 10 spins and a special symbol comes into play that can expand to cover the entire reel upon which it appeared.
The potential here for big wins is pretty pronounced. In theory, it’s possible to win 5000x your stake should you manage to decorate all reels with this symbol.

Play Red Hot Wild at Videoslots
11 Wager Free Spins & Deposit £10+, Get 100% bonus up to £200Red Hot Wild is an old-school 3 x 3 slot game from Barcrest, that’s very, very closely based on the bricks-and-mortar fruit machines of yesteryear. Like many other games of this ilk, there really isn’t much to look at nor is there a great deal going on when it comes to bonus features. But as a time-passer for casual gamers, this particular Barcrest effort just about hits the spot.
To win, you’ll need to land symbols across one of five pay-lines – low-value symbols are represented by cherries, oranges, plums and pears, while blue stars, bells and bars serve as medium value symbols. 7’s are the most valuable, paying out 10x your stake.
Barcrest’s Big Bet option is also available allowing you to stake £20 or £30 a game in order to receive five linked spins. Wild symbols come into play as well and can shift down a position to help form winning combinations. For £30 stakes, the wilds become sticky, remaining fixed in position until your spins have finished. As a result of these features, the RTP raises to 96%.

Play Legend of the Pharaohs at Your Favorite Casino
Deposit £10+, Spin The Mega Reel, Top Prize 500 Starburst SpinsLegend of the Pharaohs is a five reel slot with 20 pay-lines, a free spins bonus round, wild reels and Barcrest’s popular big bet feature.
As with many Barcrest games, Legend of the Pharaohs isn’t very sophisticated in the visuals department. Sporting a cartoon theme, the reels are decorated with passable renderings of hieroglyphs, a scarab beetle and an ankh cross.
Every…single…spin is accompanied by an Egyptian Ney flute which is played at a pitch that would smash most glass objects. Alarmingly, the mute button is more than one click away.
In the base game, you’ll need to land at least three symbols from left to right. Standard wilds are also in play, substituting all other symbols to create winning combinations. The free spins round is activated by unveiling three or more pyramid scatters in any position.
In addition to 10 free spins, you’ll receive one, two and three bonus extras for landing three, four or five scatters respectively. There are three bonus extras: colossal symbols in which random symbols become 3 x 3 symbols, win eliminators in which all low value symbols are removed from the reels and wild reels in which an entire reel turns wild.
The Big Bet feature comprises four stake options: £20, £30, £40 and £50. All offer five linked spins with the latter tiers featuring more lucrative rewards as well as a bonus wheel made up of cash prizes.
RTP: 96.1%, Minimum Stake: 0.20

Play Cash Stax at Peachy Games
Deposit £20+, Get 100% Slot Bonus (up to £50) & 20 Spins on Book Of DeadCash Stax is a five reel slot from Barcrest that’s been around since the very distant days of 2015. If you’re looking for a reel-spinner to pass the time between bingo bouts, then this may be the game for you.
Although pretty basic in terms of play, there’s just enough here to keep seasoned slot gamers entertained. In the base game, wins are possible by landing three, four or five symbols across a pay-line from left to right. The symbols are largely made up of retro icons such as bars, crosses and 7s. The latter symbols are the most valuable paying up to 50x your stake.
Wilds are also in play, substituting all others apart from the scatters to help create winning combos. Look out for O symbols as well – land enough and you’ll gain access to a free spins round which features re-triggerable spins and extra win multipliers. It’s possible here to win 25 spins depending on how many O symbols activated the round.
Bacrest’s Big Bet option has been included which goes some way in compensating for an appalling base RTP of 94.12%. Up your stake using said feature and you’ll get five linked spins, the slot’s RTP rises to 98.14% and the pay-lines increase from 10 to 30.

Play Wild Times at Fun Casino
Deposit £10+, Get 100% Slot Bonus Up To £123Wild Times is a three reel slot from Barcrest that was launched way back in 2016. It’s a no-frills retro-themed game with just five pay-lines, albeit with the big bet option thrown in as well as multiplier wilds.
Wild Times is based on the classic bricks and mortar slot machines of old – hence there’s not really a great deal to look at. To win in the base game, you’ll need to land three symbols across a pay-line. Of these, the bell and stars are the most lucrative and can pay out 100x and 500x your stake respectively.
Also in play is a standard wild which substitutes all others to help form winning combinations – it also comes with multipliers. When it’s part of a winning combo, a wheel will appear to determine the size of the multiplier.
The Big Bet option is available for 10 – 25 credits and raises the RTP from 96% to a much healthier 98%. The pay-lines also increase to 27 and an all ways pays become active.

Play Rainbow Riches Leprechaun’s Gold at SpinYoo
Deposit £20+, Get 100% Slot Bonus (up to £250) + 100 Yoo SpinsRainbow Riches Leprechaun’s Gold is yet another entry in Barcrest’s conveyor belt franchise of slot games. Although borrowing heavily from pretty much all of the other Rainbow Riches titles, RRLG comprises seven reels and a raft of additional features such as the developer’s usual standout free spins round.
The reels are decorated with the usual Gaelic clichés including a harp and 4-leaf clover, with the seven reel game area set against rolling green hills. The game logo is the most valuable and pays out 20 times your stake when it lands seven times across a pay-line.
A leprechaun bonus symbol randomly appears during the base game. Land three and you’ll gain access to the Rainbow Ring Spinner game. Here, the leprechaun jumps into a wheel of fortune which triggers either one of the bonus features or the free spins round.
If you manage to unveil a question mark symbol during play, it will transform all others to help generate some decent returns. It can also turn into a wild, in which case the Wild Rover feature comes into play. For this bonus, random wilds are included on the reels and have the potential of producing further wins. The free spins round can reward up to 25 spins, during which the question mark and wilds stay in play.
Like many Barcrest Slots, RRLG includes a Big Bet option which provides access to the Super Rainbow Reels feature. You’ll then be able to activate up to three rainbow reels depending on how much you stake: £20, £30 or £50. The RTP also increases from 94% to 97.75%.

Play King’s Honour at Videoslots
11 Wager Free Spins & Deposit £10+, Get 100% bonus up to £200King’s Honour is a ten reel slot that features the same Colossal Reels engine found on Rainbow Riches Reels of Gold. As a result, the game includes the same bonus features albeit with a medieval twist. The Big Bet mode is also available.
The action takes place across two reel sets. The main reels feature a 5×4 layout while the Colossal reels have a 5 x 12 configuration. Low value symbols are represented by playing card icons (brilliant!) while medium to high symbols are signified by goblets, crowns and axes.
Like Reels of Gold, King’s Honour includes an excellent array of bonus features. Highlights include transferring wilds in which stacked wilds transfer to the Colossal Reels and fully expand.
Then you’ve got the Kings Charge Bonus mechanic – a random ‘mystery’ bonus where a picture symbol is selected and then repeated across the reels, sometimes covering multiple positions. There’s also a Siege Spins feature that awards a single re-spin when you land 2 free spin symbols. Should at least three bonus symbols appear on reels one, three and five, the Reel of Honour is activated and you’ll get the chance to spin for free spins, multipliers and cash prizes.
As is the case with all Barcrest Big Bet slots, you can also purchase five linked spins for either £20 or £30. With both options, any wild that turns up on the left reel set will expand to fill all positions and transfer to the Colossal reels game area. The same applies for the £30 mode but with the added benefit of bonus symbols which can appear in any position across both game areas.

Play Black Magic Fruits at Fun Casino
Deposit £10+, Get 100% Slot Bonus Up To £123Black Magic Fruits is a three reel retro slot with five pay-lines and the popular Big Bet option. Released back in 2015, this old-school game wouldn’t look amiss in a land-based slot machine cabinet (from the 1970s).
We won’t concern ourselves too much with how BMF looks – suffice to say the visuals are dreadful. But that’s not really the point. Black Magic Fruits is aimed squarely at no-frills slot spinners.
The three reels are adorned with basic renderings of traditional fruit symbols. Of these, the watermelons are the most valuable paying out 200x your stake. This increases to 1250 x your stake if you land three red seven icons – these also serve as the wild and really come into play during the Big Bet feature.
The Big Bet feature rewards five spins for £20 and the RTP increases to 96.11%. Keep in mind though that standard pay-outs are halved. To compensate, the red sevens turn into standard wilds, substituting all others. They also become paying symbols that can reward up to 125x your pay-line stake.
A very, very traditional slot then, that should appeal to casual or died in the wool players.

Play Monopoly On the Money at Videoslots
11 Wager Free Spins & Deposit £10+, Get 100% bonus up to £200Monopoly On the Money is a five reel slot from Barcrest. Although it only includes 10 pay-lines, the game features a free spins round and a Big Bet mode that rewards linked spins and an improved RTP.
This is Barcrest’s third Monopoly-inspired slot game. And in keeping with its counterparts, the visuals are fairly basic. Joining the playing card symbols are decent renderings of classic pieces including a cat, dog and hat.
Also decorating the reels (on occasion) is the game logo, which will pay out five times your stake when five land across a pay-line. The free spins round is triggered by landing 3 or more scatters (Go symbols) in any position. You’ll then be rewarded with up to 50 free spins – before the round commences it’s possible to gamble these for the chance to win more spins.
Players looking for a fast-track to some of the game’s bonus features have access to Barcrest’s Big Bet mode.
As ever, five linked spins will be awarded and a host of features activated including sticky wilds, re-spins, a chance card bonus pick and win round and a Hotel Extension feature. The latter option, in which the reels are extended by up to 2 positions, is only available for £40 and £50 stake options.
The Big Bet mode can prove extremely lucrative given that the cat, dog and hat pieces can pay out 10, 100 and 200 times your stake – this is of course provided that you land five of them. Should the game logo appear five times, you’ll receive a pay-out of 400 times your stake.

Play Pearl of the Caribbean at Fun Casino
Deposit £10+, Get 100% Slot Bonus Up To £123Pearl of the Caribbean is a five reel slot from Barcrest comprising 250 pay-lines, a free spins bonus and big bet feature. The game is fronted up by a female pirate and the reels decorated with an assortment of swashbuckling symbols including treasure chests, a skull and a pirate ship.
The Jolly Roger is the most lucrative and will pay out 25 times your stake if you’re very, very lucky. The pirate woman serves as the wild and can expand to activate four additional reel sets that sit above the main game area.
Land at least three coin scatters and you’ll unlock the free spins bonus feature. 8, 12 or 15 free spins will then be awarded depending on how many scatters appear. If you manage to unveil a wild symbol during the free spins round it will expand and then activate the upper reels.
The Big Bet feature includes five linked spins and three options. For £20, all pirate wilds expand regardless of their position. It’s the same for £30 with all low value symbols also removed from the reels. For £50, you get all of the above but with multipliers of x5 – although pricy, the latter option can make for some pretty substantial pay-outs.

Play Rainbow Riches Pick ‘n’ Mix at Videoslots
11 Wager Free Spins & Deposit £10+, Get 100% bonus up to £200Rainbow Riches Pick ‘n’ Mix is the follow-up to Barcrest’s celebrated original comprising five reels and 20 pay-lines. However, unlike its land-based predecessor, it includes five extra bonus features and a big bet option.
As far as the base game goes, there’s not much to distinguish Pick ‘n’ Mix from its more illustrious stable-mate. The main selling point here is the five bonus features: road to riches, pots of gold, the free spins bonus feature, the magic toadstool and the cash crop feature.
‘Road to Riches’ is activated by landing at least three leprechaun symbols – you’ll then get the chance to travel on a road of gold to win up to 500 times your stake. The Cash Crop feature is unlocked when you land three or more leprechauns with rainbow symbols. A 10 x 5 grid of coins is then presented – all of the coins then spin to reveal either a blank space or multiplier.
The Pots of Gold bonus is triggered by landing 3 pots of gold with rainbow symbols and you’ll be awarded either a bronze, silver or gold pot of gold – the latter is worth 500 times your bet.
Land 3 scatter mushroom symbols and the magic toadstool pick and win game is unveiled – from here you get at least three picks from a field of 24 toadstools with the chance of winning multipliers or a fairy who’ll reveal adjacent toadstool symbols thus leading to more wins. The free spins bonus is accessible when you land 3, 4 or 5 scatters and you will be awarded 10, 20 or 30 spins respectively.
The big bet bonus feature is available immediately and gives you the option of spending £20 for 5 big bet spins with multipliers. Alternatively, you can spend £30 to unlock a Win Multiplier wheel where every win is boosted with a 5x multiplier –what’s more all wild symbols remain sticky and the RTP increases to 98%.

Play Goldaur Guardians at WinWindsor
Deposit £10+, Spin The Bonus Wheel, Top Prize 1000% Matchup BonusGoldaur Guardians is a conventional five reel game from Microgaming with 20 pay-lines and a max win potential 1000x. Yep, we’re back in tree-hollow territory once more thanks to this fantasy-themed slot which is set in an elven forest (for a change, like).
Yet it seems this mystical Microgaming offering is under some kind of transcendental spell because for once, the reels aren’t actually decorated with playing card images of any kind – no fairy-tale, we promise.
Instead, low value symbols are represented by animated coins while higher value ones are signified by four guardians: Oberon, Diana, Lila and Alandelo. Of these symbols, Oberon is the most valuable, awarding up to 15x your stake when 5 land on a pay-line.
The scatter symbol is represented by a golden tree and can activate up to 10 bonus spins. It also pays out 100x when five appear. You’ll also be rewarded with 5, 7 or 10 free spins when 3, 4 or 5 scatters appear across the reels respectively. The wild is a little less lucrative but still offers x50 pay-out potential.
In addition to free spins are the hero spin and hero trail bonuses as well as a hyper-spins option. The former is awarded randomly during base game spins with one of the characters activated and stacked on reels 1 and 2.
The hero trail is activated when one of the guardian symbols appear stacked on reels 1 and 3. The other reels will then spin and a re-trigger symbol comes into play. When this occurs, the next guardian symbol is activated and extra spins awarded.
The hyper-spins option allows you to buy re-spins for one reel. Although risky, it can be profitable, provided of course that wilds or scatters appear. It also helps that this option is immediately available after each base spins. So like all bonus buy slots (that are still permitted), you don’t have to spin endlessly for the privilege of unlocking the feature, thus potentially saving time, money and effort.

Play Soldier of Rome at Fun Casino
Deposit £10+, Get 100% Slot Bonus Up To £123Soldier of Rome is a seven reel slot featuring WMS’ Barcrest proprietary ‘big bet’ option as well the popular ‘money burst’ and ‘Mighty Reels’ mechanics.
As with most standard slots, low value symbols are represented by playing card imagery while medium-to-high value ones are signified by special symbols. In our present context, these relate to ancient Rome and include a chariot, a soldier, an emperor, eagle, helmet and female character. The latter is the most valuable and will award five times your stake if five appear across a pay-line.
The game is played across seven reels which comprise 3 mighty reels and 4 money-burst reels. The soldier serves as the wild, replacing all others to create winning combos.
Although the wild only appears on the third, fourth and fifth reels, it occupies three reel positions and can expand across the entire reel. The top five rows in the main reels panel also come into play, thus increasing the pay-lines to 100.
A free spins game is activated when a minimum of three Soldier of Rome scatters or game logos appear anywhere. You’ll then be awarded at least ten free spins – the number you’ll receive depends on how many of either bonus symbol that you land.
The Big Bet game follows a similar format to the old Bonus Buy option, but comprises an extra five spins as well as different suite of features according to the stake option that you choose: £20, £30, £50.
For £20, wild symbols only need to be in view partially to trigger the Mighty Reels. A £30 option is the same as the £20 game but also removes all low value symbols from the reels. The £50 stake is the same as both previous options but activates the Mighty Reels. Opting for the Big Bet Option also boosts the RTP from 93.78% to 97.82%.

Play Ooh Aah Dracula at Fun Casino
Deposit £10+, Get 100% Slot Bonus Up To £123Ooh Aah Dracula is a five reel online slot with 10 pay-lines, a free spins round, two bonus features and a high-roller option. Visually, the game comprises a comic cartoon theme that just about holds its own by today’s standards. Medium to high value symbols are represented by a werewolf, a vampire bride a castle and the game’s logo which can pay out as much as 200 times your stake.
The free spins round is activated by landing three heart scatters and you’ll be given 15 free spins – this can be boosted with another five free spins by way of the Heart Attack bonus which locks the player’s free spins symbols in place and spins the reels that don’t include heart scatters.
Helpfully, the slot also includes a Best Strategy Meter that appears during the free spins round and suggests whether should keep your winnings or gamble by leaning to the left or right respectively.
It’s also possible to select one of two High Roller options for 20 or 30 credits. Although similar to the controversial bonus buy options, these reward linked spins as well as exclusive access to the Graveyard bonus round which awards mystery cash prizes.
These are pick-and-win games where you’ll be presented with either 5 or 6 (super) graves and get to choose to receive a cash reward.

Play Hercules High and Mighty at Grosvenor Casino
Deposit £20, Play with £50Hercules High and Mighty is a five reel slot from Barcrest that’s based on the legendary Roman/Greek warrior. Released in 2016, it features 100 pay-lines, a free spins bonus round and three-level big bet feature. The actual game interface comprises the usual five reels but with an extra row above the main set for the free spins.
Although it’s been around for a good few years, the game looks OK with the reels sporting an assortment of mythological characters such as Zeus, Hera and Pegasus. As is typical of most slots, these character symbols are of medium to high value with Zeus the most lucrative of all (250x your stake when five appear on a pay-line).
The free spins round is activated by landing gold scatters in any position on the reels, Three will award you with 8 spins, 4 scatters will award you with 12 and 5 will award you with 20 spins. From here, the action shifts to the top reels with the ‘Mighty Reels’ becoming active should an expanding wild appear and the number of pay-lines are doubled.
Hercules also includes a kind of ‘bonus buy’ variant, albeit with an improved return rate as well as other benefits not present in the base game.
There are three levels: £20, £30 and £50, each of which offers five linked spins with Hercules becoming an expanding wild. For the £30 round all lower value symbols are also removed. This is the same for the £50 with the added perk of Hercules becoming a sticky wild, thus guaranteeing some sort of win.

Play Monopoly Big Event at Race Casino
Deposit £10+, Get 100% Slot Bonus Up To £100Monopoly Big Event is a five reel slot with twenty pay-lines. It is the first from Barcrest to be based on the iconic board game and includes a ‘big event’ pick-and-win round, free spins and a big bet bonus buy game.
The reels are adorned with renderings of famous silver pieces such as a car, a battleship, dog and cat. Mr Monopoly is the most valuable, paying out 2000x your stake when five appear. Typically, the wild symbol substitutes all others apart from the Big Event icon and ‘in-jail’ icon.
The Big Event is a pick-and-win round where you can choose community or chance cards to earn extra spins and guaranteed wins. The round is triggered by landing the related symbol on reels one three and five. If you activate the round with two stacked symbols, you’ll enter the round with a House Sneak Preview. Land three and you’ll activate the Hotel Sneak Preview.
These previews reveal chance card positions for the house and hotels respectively, giving you the chance to either activate wild reels or fix wild symbols in place during the free spins round.
The Big Bet round comprises a £20 or £30 game. Each one features an improved RTP as well as the chance to win up to 250,000 credits.
The £20 round is progressive, with multipliers added to wins for each spin. For the £30 game you’ll be presented with a spinning wheel that will eventually reveal either a progressive win multiplier where up to 5x are added to each spin.
There’s also a ‘persisting wild big event’ in which the big event symbol becomes wild and locks in place for the five free spins. If three or more of these symbols remain visible at the end, you’ll be rewarded with the big event bonus.

Play Reel Rush 2 at Lucky VIP Casino
Deposit £20+, Get 100% Slot Bonus (up to £100) + Up To £7 Live Casino BonusReel Rush 2 by Net Ent is the sequel to the original Reel Rush game from 2013. Like the original, it has classic platformer video game styling and a distinctive 45 way diamond shaped reels arrangement, with extra positions that are unlocked on respins after every won, increasing the numbers of ways to win up to a maximum of 1875 ways on the fifth respin. Starting with only one symbol in play on reel 1 (which can’t be a wild), it can be hard to get the string of wins going but there are some random bonus features that help by awarding a re-spin on a loss, turning symbols wild or unlocking extra parts of the play area. Reel Rush 2 also has a 3125 way Free Spins bonus round (triggered by unlocking the whole of the play area) which turns into Super Free Spins (with a progressive multiplier going up on every win) if the player has collected enough tokens through play, gambles or pays to top them up to the required 2000.
Basically, this is a buy the bonus round slot – but instead of being able to buy it straight off (which is no longer allowed in the UK), you have to wait for the basic bonus round to be triggered before you can buy the upgrade.
Reel Rush 2 can be played from 20p a spin and has RTP of 95.53% – 96.58%; the variable RTP is because there is a slightly higher RTP attached to buying Super Tokens to upgrade the bonus round than to playing it as is or gambling.

Play Break Da Bank Again Respin at Peachy Games
Deposit £20+, Get 100% Slot Bonus (up to £50) & 20 Spins on Book Of DeadBreak Da Bank Again Respin by Gameburger for Microgaming is a 9 line slot and as you’d expect from the name it is the latest in a long running series. The big gimmick is the respin feature (disabled on autoplay for obvious reasons).
At the end of each spin, every reel has a respin option with a displayed price. Players can respin individual reels as many times as they like, paying each time, to try and complete a win or trigger the free spins bonus round.
Like traditional bonus buy games, the respin feature can be activated straight away which gives you the opportunity to save time, money (potentially) and effort, while increasing your chances of winning. Although not free, the cost of activating the respins is cheap in comparison to those slot games banned by the UKGC.
Break Da Bank Again Respin also has a 5x multiplier wild symbol and this is particularly lucrative during the bonus round as it stacks with the 5x multiplier applied to all bonus round wins.
Break Da Bank Again Respin can be played from 9p a spin, with respins priced from 1p (but expect useful respins to cost more). The RTP is 96.08% for the base game and 96.58% for respins.

White Rabbit is a Megaways slot but without the extra horizontal reel seen in Bonanza, Extra Chilli and many others. The bonus round is also a bit different to usual; instead of an increasing multiplier, there is a special Cupcake symbol that makes the reel it is on increase in height by one symbol for the rest of the free spins. When a reel reaches the maximum height of 12 symbols, between 3 and 12 extra free spins are awarded and the reel is enhanced with extra high scoring symbols and wilds. If all reels reach maximum height there are up to 248,832 ways to win.
The RTP of White Rabbit without buying this potentially very exciting bonus round is 97.24%; buying the bonus round immediately without collecting any BTG coins towards it has a slightly better RTP of 97.77% and as BTG coins are collected, the RTP slowly goes down to 97.24%. This is a slot where it really is all about buying the bonus round and we suspect a great many players don’t even bother with the base game.
In October 2019, the UK Gambling Commission moved to ban Bonus Buy slots from the UK. White Rabbit was temporarily taken offline and returned a couple of weeks later minus the bonus buy button (it’s still possible to collect BTG coins towards the bonus but you have to wait for the price to reach 0 to trigger the bonus round).

Play Extra Chilli at Regal Wins
Deposit £10+, Get 100% Slot Bonus Up To £500 (for "Match Collection" slots)Extra Chilli by Big Time Gaming is a Megaways slot which was the first game in which you could not only buy the bonus round (for 50x stake) but also gamble it (repeatedly) to get a better bonus round with an extra 4 free spins – extra spicy indeed! Megaways slots are quite high variance anyway and the ability to buy and gamble the bonus round sent the variance through the roof. The UKGC considered this to be too dangerous and the game had to be temporarily removed from the UK market in October 2019. A month later, it is back but without the buy the bonus round button; you can still collect Big Time Gaming coins towards triggering it.
If you gamble the bonus round in Extra Chilli and lose, you can return to the base game with no free spins at all which is pretty brutal. In subsequent games with the gamble the bonus round feature, it was refined so that players could make smaller gambles to increment the free spins one at a time and have a better chance of winning.
Play Extra Chilli long enough and you may manage to trigger what is admittedly a potentially very exciting bonus round naturally or collect enough BTG coins to start it – if you haven’t lost your shirt, your shoes and the horse you rode in on by then. Handle with extreme care!

Play Vikings Unleashed Megaways at Paddy Power Games
50 No Deposit Free Spins + Deposit & Play £10, Get Another 100 Free Spins - All Winnings In CashVikings Unleashed Megaways is one of several games produced by Blueprint using the Megaways mechanic under licence from Big Time Gaming (who invented it). The base game plays very like Bonanza and what makes it different to many other Megaways slots is the bonus round – or rather the elaborate mechanisms for setting up the bonus round.
Before bonus buy slots were banned in the UK, there were FOUR different options for buying the bonus round (priced at 25x, 50x, 75x and 100x spin value). Now, you have to wait to trigger it in the normal way.
Prior to the bonus round starting the player can gamble to get a better bonus round – one extra spin and one multiplier step at a time. Gambling successfully all the way up to the maximum of 27 free spins starting with a 10x multiplier can open the way for a very large win indeed, as every cascade win during the bonus round increases the multiplier by 1, but lose a gamble and you lose the entire bonus round.
Vikings Unleashed Megaways has RTP of 96.5% and can be played from 20p a spin.
1) To take part, you must register via the registration code PGCTV1 and opt in. 2) Get SMS-verified by supplying a valid telephone number. 3) Enter the validation code received by SMS to redeem the free spins. 4) Free Spins are valid on any of our Daily Jackpot games. 5) Free Spins will expire in 10 days from receipt of the offer. *18+ BeGambleAware.org Please play responsibly #ad

Play Who Wants To Be A Millionaire at Videoslots
11 Wager Free Spins & Deposit £10+, Get 100% bonus up to £200Who Wants To Be A Millionaire is the latest release from Big Time Gaming, the creators of Bonanza and of the Megaways system. Big Time Gaming are known for the extreme high volatility of their slot games and thrilling bonus rounds – and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire has by far the most insane and ridiculous bonus round yet seen.
The base game plays very much like Big Time Gaming’s earlier release Extra Chilli, and the bonus round builds on a concept first seen in Extra Chilli – the ability to gamble the bonus round in the hope of getting a better one. In Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, the entire point is to gamble the bonus round and just as in the TV show, the player has to choose correctly from four options at each step to increase the number of free spins. Win at every step and the 8 spins initially awarded can go all the way up to 50 spins. As in the TV show, there are three lifelines and there’s also safety nets at 10 spins and 20 spins ensuring that once you get past the risky first step you can’t lose the entire bonus round. As the free spins are played with a multiplier that increases with every win, every extra spin won can make a huge difference to potential winnings.

Back in November 2017, Big Time Gaming released a game with a new feature that would change the face of online slots. That game was White Rabbit and the feature was “Feature DropTM” – aka buying the bonus round.
Big Time Gaming were already well known for producing slots with insane bonus rounds but, as is the way with high variance slots, players were having to wait a long, long time to play them. White Rabbit short circuited that by providing a means for players to go straight to the bonus round for 100x stake.
In White Rabbit, players could also collect BTG coins during a session of play to reduce the cost of triggering the bonus round (or eventually trigger it immediately), but this part of the feature hasn’t made a reappearance in many of the later releases, probably because everyone who was interested in buying the bonus round would do so at the start of play and not wait to get BTG coins to bring the cost down.
Big Time Gaming weren’t just catering to impatient players by making it possible to buy the bonus round – they were also getting themselves masses of free publicity. Their earlier games Bonanza and Danger High Voltage had already established the idea of high variance slots as a spectator sport on the Twitch live streaming platform. Feature Drop meant that the streamers could make things much more exciting for their audience by missing out all that boring waiting for the bonus round – and it also meant that by buying the bonus round multiple times, they could get a REALLY good bonus round to post on YouTube without too much time and effort (just lots of money). The number of such videos on YouTube now is a testament to the brilliance of the idea.
Big Time Gaming’s next releases Extra Chilli took the idea even further. In Extra Chilli, not only can a player instantly buy the bonus round, but they can then gamble the bonus round to try and get a better bonus round – not just once, but multiple times all the way from the basic 8 free spins up to 24 free spins.
It wasn’t long before other game providers got on board with the idea – first Blueprint, on several of their games with the Megaways reel array also invented by Big Time Gaming, and then Foxium with The Great Albini (notable because it otherwise doesn’t resemble a BTG slot).
In October 2019 the UK Gambling Commission apparently came to the conclusion that buying the bonus round puts players at risk of becoming problem gamblers and wrote to operators asking them to remove such games from the UK market. The feature certainly enabled a huge amount of money to be gambled (and potentially lost) in a very short space of time. Even at the minimum spin value of 20p, the bonus round in Extra Chilli cost £10 to buy and because of the gamble facility, the £10 could be instantly lost and another £10 spent right away; at the top spin value of £40, that’s a huge £2000 that could be lost in less than a minute (making FOBTs look like small potatoes).
The situation in the UK as we go into 2021 is that you can still:
- Gamble the bonus round (Who Wants To Be A Millionaire)
- Collect coins or tokens in game to trigger or buy the bonus round (Kingdoms Rise, modified version of White Rabbit)
- Pay to upgrade the bonus round once you’ve triggered it through normal play or coin collection (Reel Rush 2)
- Buy a spin of a wheel that has the bonus round as one of its possible outcomes (Rainbow Riches Pick & Mix)
- Pay to respin a single reel to get that third scatter you need to trigger the bonus round (Rebets Splendour)
What you can no longer do is simply buy the bonus round without playing for a while first as this would open the door to being able to buy multiple bonus rounds in a short space of time and potentially lose lurid amounts of money.
Most of the games concerned are now back – but in special UK versions with the Buy The Bonus button disabled.
Sadly this isn’t the case with all slots, even for some of the most high-profile titles. Happily though, Netent’s Starburst XXXtreme is available to British players albeit with its special XXXtreme spins feature disabled. This allows players to purchase spins at 10 or 95 times the regular stake in order to guarantee the appearance of wilds on every spin. Because of the high value multipliers attached to wild symbols, the feature falls foul of the bonus buy embargo. Nevertheless, an adapted version of Starburst XXXtreme is to be found at plenty of British-based iGaming sites – just don’t expect to pay for spins.
