Rainbow Riches Leprechaun’s Gold is yet another entry in Barcrest’s conveyor belt franchise of slot games. Although borrowing heavily from pretty much all of the other Rainbow Riches titles, RRLG comprises seven reels and a raft of additional features such as the developer’s usual standout free spins round.

The reels are decorated with the usual Gaelic clichés including a harp and 4-leaf clover, with the seven reel game area set against rolling green hills. The game logo is the most valuable and pays out 20 times your stake when it lands seven times across a pay-line.

The reels are adorned with renderings of famous silver pieces such as a car, a battleship, dog and cat. Mr Monopoly is the most valuable, paying out 2000x your stake when five appear. Typically, the wild symbol substitutes all others apart from the Big Event icon and ‘in-jail’ icon.

The Big Event is a pick-and-win round where you can choose community or chance cards to earn extra spins and guaranteed wins. White Rabbit by Big Time Gaming was groundbreaking – the first slot game in which players could go directly to the bonus round by paying 100x stake.

White Rabbit is a Megaways slot but without the extra horizontal reel seen in Bonanza, Extra Chilli and many others.  The bonus round is also a bit different to usual; instead of an increasing multiplier, there is a special Cupcake symbol that makes the reel it is on increase in height by one symbol for the rest of the free spins.  When a reel reaches the maximum height of 12 symbols, between 3 and 12 extra free spins are awarded and the reel is enhanced with extra high scoring symbols and wilds.  If all reels reach maximum height there are up to 248,832 ways to win.

The RTP of White Rabbit without buying this potentially very exciting bonus round is 97.24%; buying the bonus round immediately without collecting any BTG coins towards it has a slightly better RTP of 97.77% and as BTG coins are collected, the RTP slowly goes down to 97.24%.  This is a slot where it really is all about buying the bonus round and we suspect a great many players don’t even bother with the base game.

In October 2019, the UK Gambling Commission moved to ban Bonus Buy slots from the UK.  White Rabbit was temporarily taken offline and returned a couple of weeks later minus the bonus buy button (it’s still possible to collect BTG coins towards the bonus but you have to wait for the price to reach 0 to trigger the bonus round).

Extra Chilli by Big Time Gaming is a Megaways slot which was the first game in which you could not only buy the bonus round (for 50x stake) but also gamble it (repeatedly) to get a better bonus round with an extra 4 free spins – extra spicy indeed!  Megaways slots are quite high variance anyway and the ability to buy and gamble the bonus round sent the variance through the roof.  The UKGC considered this to be too dangerous and the game had to be temporarily removed from the UK market in October 2019.  A month later, it is back but without the buy the bonus round button; you can still collect Big Time Gaming coins towards triggering it.

If you gamble the bonus round in Extra Chilli and lose, you can return to the base game with no free spins at all which is pretty brutal.  In subsequent games with the gamble the bonus round feature, it was refined so that players could make smaller gambles to increment the free spins one at a time and have a better chance of winning.

Vikings Unleashed Megaways is one of several games produced by Blueprint using the Megaways mechanic under licence from Big Time Gaming (who invented it).  The base game plays very like Bonanza and what makes it different to many other Megaways slots is the bonus round – or rather the elaborate mechanisms for setting up the bonus round.

Before bonus buy slots were banned in the UK, there were FOUR different options for buying the bonus round (priced at 25x, 50x, 75x and 100x spin value).  Now, you have to wait to trigger it in the normal way.
