The bingo sites listed here all offer free or bonus spins on slots as part of their welcome offer and/or as a regular player promotion. But why do we call some of the offers free spins and some of them bonus spins?

Free Spins vs Bonus Spins
When is a free spin not a free spin? When it’s a bonus spin – and many slot spin offers are billed as free spins when they would be better described as bonus spins. Basically the difference is as follows:
- Free spins offers pay winnings in cash
- Bonus spins offers pay winnings as a slot bonus with a wagering requirement
Win Cap – this puts a limit on the initial winnings from the free spins. E.g. 10 free spins, maximum win £2.50.
Max Convertible – this puts a limit, not on the initial winnings from the spins, but on the amount that can eventually be turned into withdrawable cash after completing the wagering requirement.
Use Or Lose – with this type of spins offer, the spins have to be claimed on the day of issue or they disappear. This can be a problem if the spins are issued in batches over several days.
Playthrough Rules – when winnings are paid as a bonus it may be for a restricted range of games.
Time Limits – once claimed spins may have quite a short period of validity and in the case of bonus spins there may also be a time limit within which the wagering requirement has to be completed.
Play Order – although spins themselves can always be used right away regardless of what else is in your account, if winnings are paid as a bonus the play order becomes important. If the play order is Cash First you won’t be able to start on the bonus until your account is empty of cash (a problem if there’s a time limit).
Fluffy Favourites is undoubtedly the most common slot game for free and bonus spins offers – at bingo sites anyway. (At slot and casino sites it’s more commonly Starburst or another NetEnt slot).
Bingo Software/Network Overview
At Playtech bingo sites free spins come as a free spins wallet that can be used on a selection of Playtech slots and winnings are paid in cash.
Mecca Bingo is different as their backend is not managed by Playtech – they have free spins offers on a wider range of slots but again, winnings are in cash.
Dragonfish have an odd looking arrangement whereby free spins are played in points instead of in real money. The winnings are then paid as a slot bonus (at most Dragonfish bingo sites) or in cash (at No Wagering Dragonfish bingo sites) and are subject to a win cap.
Dragonfish also offer a couple of exotic mutant types of spin
- Speedy Spins – instead of a set number of spins, the player has a time limit to complete as many spins as possible.
- Jackpot Spins – the player has an (extremely tiny) chance of winning the progressive jackpot but no other winnings are paid out.
Jumpman bingo sites often present their welcome offer (the Mega Wheel, which is also available as part of ongoing promotions) as the chance to win up to 500 free spins, but since winnings are paid as a slot bonus with 65x wagering requirement and there’s a win cap of £8 per 10 spins and a £250 max convertible, our view is that these are bonus spins not free spins.
Cozy bingo sites occasionally give out spins (usually as part of a tailored deposit offer). They are typically bonus spins with a 40x wagering requirement on the winnings and a 14 day expiry.
Gamesys free spins are on own brand slots and winnings are paid in cash
The standalone sites Mr Q and Bingocams both pay their free spins winnings in cash – at Mr Q the spins are on Thunderkick or Eyecon slots and at Bingocams they are on Starburst.
Relax bingo sites give out spins on their own mini games as part of the loyalty scheme. These are free of wagering requirements. Bonus slots spins are given out as prizes in slot tournaments as in other promotions – these have a wagering requirement but the spend order is bonus first.
Stride bingo sites give out bonus spins on their own brand slots, with a win cap and 25x wagering requirement.
